I once had a local paper print some of my photographs and attribute them to another photographer. Now, I could have got on the phone and ranted at them, got them to print an apology, but in honesty that would have done me little good. It would probably just have got me a certain kind of reputation with the press for a short time, and then they'd have forgotten me.
Enter 'the other way'. Instead, what I did was ask if we could find a mutually beneficial solution. As a result I was featured in the paper, I provided them with some images for another feature where they did correctly attribute them to me, and some years on I've been featured countless times, helped the press out on numerous occasions and developed a really good working relationship with them. And that relationship is invaluable to me.
So next time something goes wrong, before you react, ask yourself 'Is there another way?'
