What? Aren't we all taught to say those words as kids? We're polite. We always say please and thank you!
Well, no actually. Most people infer please and thank you. With a smile, a tone of voice, a smilie face, a raised eyebrow, a tilt of the head, a 'could you/would you' start to their sentence. 'Could you pass the salt?', 'I'd love it if you liked my Facebook fan page', 'Oh, that's great, you're a star.' And variations along a theme. Have you noticed how few times people use alternatives to please and thank you?
More to the point, have you noticed how few times YOU use alternatives to please and thank you, and infer that was what you meant? Over the next week, have someone pick you up on when you miss your please and thank you out. It's eye opening. Scarily eye opening. I bet you'll surprise yourself at how often you thought you'd said please or thank you but in fact you inferred the words and didn't actually use them.
And since I've been adding in my please and thank you more often guess what? Things have been going my way more. Things have been happening. People have been smiling at me more, people have been helping me more. I genuinely believe there is something in this.
So, time for your please and thank you's, please. Thank you.
