There's a blog post to be written, a newsletter to go out, a decision to be made, a client to be contacted, emails to be answered ... but before you get going on them you'll just put the washing on/hang the washing out/clear up the breakfast dishes ... there's always so much to do.
Having experienced this for myself in the past, and watching clients go through it as well, I have become increasingly aware that there are a couple of factors at play, and we need to understand their role in our business to better understand our own actions.
It's potentially very lonely working for yourself. You may not get out the house much anymore and there's a high chance you could go a whole week not seeing or talking to another human being outside of your own immediate family or housemates. This isolation leads us to take actions that result in us ignoring our business for the satisfaction of being part of a social group. We stop giving our business attention and focus more on our own personal needs during work hours. Sure, our feelings of isolation are important to deal with - but they are not the responsibility of the business we were so carefully crafting until we got lonely.
And this means doing something on your business everyday - taking actions that make a difference. Consistent actions. If you're doing a blog, then do a blog, don't just say you're doing a blog and then never write anything. If you're sending out a newsletter each week, send it out, don't avoid it because you don't know what to say.
The best work comes from planning and routine, and so to be sure your business deserves you it's time to set the routines in place and get planning each month, each week, each day.
But you know, if that isolation is taking over, maybe it's time to acknowledge that you can't do this alone. Maybe it's time to be part of community that is specifically geared towards success in your business. This may be your local chamber of commerce, a business network with training connected to it (in Liverpool we have The Women's Org which supports women setting up their own business), or you can join in with my own group.
